Do you want to be a superhero?
Super NathanThat's two yards of red (or any favorite color), 1/4 yard yellow, 1/2 yard wonder under, 2 pkg binding that matches your solid color. You will also need about a yard of low loft quilt batting and velcro. It helps to have a quilting pencil and ruler, but not necessary. And a sewing machine. You'll definetly need a sewing machine.
Get started: Cut out two seperate pieces of the red and the batting into the shape you want. You can see in the pictures that I've done more rectangular and more shapely. Either way the kid will love it. I happen to have a pattern now for the more shapely one, if you want to borrow.
Then, I marked the top layer with evenly spaced diagonals. I used a quilting pencil to draw the lines and my quilting ruler so the lines were easily evenly spaced. You could use chalk. Or very faint pencil. But whatever you use, be sure it will wash off. When you've got it nice and marked up, pin it all in place and quilt those layers together. Press to flatten.
For the edge you can use the thicker (I think it's 3/4 inch) or the thinner (1/4?). I used the thicker the first time, and it worked well and I used the thinner this time and it worked well. For me it depended on what the store had in stock. If you use the thinner, maker sure your edges are all perfectly evenly trimmed because the binding won't have any extra to cover it, if you know what I mean. So, one pkg of the binding should go all the way around the edge of the cape.
Across the top, where the strap attaches to keep it on, is a different piece of binding. For this you'll want to make sure you have the thicker stuff. Fold the end inside itself and sew the hem until the spot where it actually attaches to the cape. Continue to sew the top binding to cape to form the collar. When you get to the other end, also fold the end inside and sew closed to make a neat edge. Now you just need to sew the velcro on each end.
If you want to wash it, now would be a good time, before you add the emblem. You'll also want to press it again.
Now it's time for the emblem.
So, basically you'll take a 8inch x 8 inch sqare of each color of material and iron it to the wonder under. Then you can use a pencil to sketch the design of the emblem and cut it out of the material. For the letter, I would suggest doing it in a simple simple block letter, bigger than you need, and then placing it on the emblem in the angly you want and trimming the edges. Also remember when you do the letter, that the wonder under is the back side of the material so sketch the mirror image (easier said than done, right?).
Iron the letter onto the emblem first. Then go zig-zag stich around it. Then, iron the whole thing onto the cape and zig-zag stich around the emblem. It's easier than trying to zig-zag around both with the whole cape.
And that's it.
